Meeting Basic Needs with Respect and Flexibility

The Choice Closet was created to offer families in Schleicher County a new way to meet their hygiene needs — one rooted in dignity, personalization, and simplicity. Too often, families in rural communities are handed the same bag of supplies, regardless of what they actually need. That model might be generous, but it’s not always effective. The Choice Closet flips the script: We give participants a monthly credit balance to “shop” online for hygiene and household essentials — like toothpaste, shampoo, deodorant, or laundry detergent. It’s free to those enrolled, but it functions like a real store: choose your items, stay within budget, and pick up at your convenience.

Why It Matters:

This approach helps families:

Choose what fits their actual needs

Plan ahead and practice real-world budgeting

Avoid unnecessary waste

Receive help without embarrassment or judgment

A Program of the Eldorado Service Center

The Choice Closet is operated by the Eldorado Service Center, a nonprofit hub that houses community-driven services ranging from food support and hygiene access to library programming and educational outreach.
We believe that small towns deserve smart solutions. The Choice Closet reflects that commitment.

Inspired by Community Leadership

This program was born from local conversations and led by the care and vision of people like Mary Gathoni, Jennifer Henderson, and a dedicated network of staff, partners, and volunteers. It’s what happens when a community takes care of its own — thoughtfully and creatively.
